Mary Rogers composed the score in a time when men dominated the musical theater writing profession. The show won a Tony for Best Musical and a Tony nomination for Carol Burnett who made her Broadway debut in the lead role. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, <em>The Princess and the Pea</em>, Mattress is funny, witty, with rousing choruses, dance, and a great score. Two women were the backbone of this musical and so it is no surprise that the show plays with gender stereotypes, gender expectations, and pushes against those while still charming its audience. The show uses comedy to pull people in and create positive emotional connection, which can inspire engagement and action. Whether it is 1959 or 2024, we need to keep representing characters that break the rules, go against the norms, and charm us all while accomplishing the task. Brilliantly, this show makes you laugh at the absurdness we put on gender roles and makes you love the characters not in spite of how they are different but BECAUSE they are different. We hope this production of <em>Mattress</em> has the power to do that for you. These students have explored the comedy and satire of the piece with a boldness that continues to wow me. I hope this production gives you that joy that keeps us coming back to these classic shows for there is richness in the art and lessons of the past. “Oh life is grand! It’s very int’resting, I think I understand!”</p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/281" hreflang="en">Musical Theater</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/571" hreflang="en">theater director</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/176" hreflang="en">Theater</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 08 May 2024 15:23:14 +0000 Nafisa Ferdous 1061 at https://theater.sitemasonry.gmu.edu Three Mason students are semifinalists in ‘NextGen’ vocal competition https://theater.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/news/2020-04/three-mason-students-are-semifinalists-nextgen-vocal-competition <span>Three Mason students are semifinalists in ‘NextGen’ vocal competition</span> <span><span>Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Tue, 04/21/2020 - 05:00</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div > </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:basic" data-inline-block-uuid="e28d7863-964a-4aca-811d-1c35ee9541b7" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blockbasic"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="block-feature-image caption-below"> <div class="feature-image"> <div class="narrow-overlaid-image"><img src="https://content.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/sites/g/files/yyqcgq336/files/content-image/Kathleen West photo.jpg" alt="" /></div> </div> <div class="feature-image-caption"> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"> <p>Kathleen West in the role of Polly Peachum in the School of Theater's production of "Threepenny Opera." The program will be streamed online April 24-25, where a panel of judges and audience members will vote for their favorites.</p> <p>Senior Kathleen West, junior Jessica Barraclough and sophomore Drake Leach are all <a href="https://theater.gmu.edu/program/view/19486">theater </a>majors concentrating in musical theater, and are three of 30 semifinalists from 14 schools across the D.C. area.</p> <p>“All three have been involved in our Mason Cabaret group, they’ve all been involved in our musical theater productions, and are very active in our program,” said <a href="https://cvpa.gmu.edu/profile/view/10142">Kevin Murray</a>, the program manager and interim director of Mason’s <a href="https://theater.gmu.edu/">School of Theater</a>. “I couldn't have been happier that they picked such great students.”</p> <p>The students auditioned for the competition earlier this year at Mason. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the competitors in the final two rounds will record their submissions in their homes, which will then be streamed and judged. <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nextgen-finding-the-voices-of-tomorrow-registration-62285049259?aff=ebdssbonlinesearch">Register to see the event</a>.</p> <p>West, from Fredericksburg, Virginia, was in the competition last year.</p> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:basic" data-inline-block-uuid="ed0c4b16-1a72-4414-9b00-cf403e2df501" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blockbasic"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="block-feature-image caption-below"> <div class="feature-image"> <div class="narrow-overlaid-image"><img src="https://content.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/sites/g/files/yyqcgq336/files/content-image/Jessica Barraclough photo.jpg" alt="" /></div> </div> <div class="feature-image-caption"> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"> <p>Junior Jessica Barraclough played Rebecca in the School of Theater production of "Rags." Usually at auditions you feel the sensation of stress, you feel the sensation of kind of freaking out a little bit. But this one I was immediately put at ease by the people running the competition.”</p> <p>Barraclough, from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, agreed: “It’s been great. It’s been a really welcoming experience. Everybody seemed so nice.”</p> <p>The competition isn’t all fun and games, though—it offers valuable experience and exposure that builds on the base created in Mason’s <a href="https://cvpa.gmu.edu/">College of Visual and Performing Arts</a>. The curriculum of the musical theater concentration, according to Murray, is “the most rigorous program we have.”</p> <p>Mason’s theater students receive weekly one-on-one vocal coaching, take acting and music theory classes, and are paired with a faculty mentor and an academic advisor to nurture their talents in college and beyond.</p> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:basic" data-inline-block-uuid="960cf4f2-242a-44bc-bbd1-b747122933b2" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blockbasic"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="block-feature-image caption-below"> <div class="feature-image"> <div class="narrow-overlaid-image"><img src="https://content.sitemasonry.gmu.edu/sites/g/files/yyqcgq336/files/content-image/Drake Leach photo.jpg" alt="" /></div> </div> <div class="feature-image-caption"> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"> <p>Sophomore Drake Leach played Davis in the School of Theater production of "Really, Really."
