1,001 Plays brings artists together from worlds apart.

Dear Colleague,

What if our students could collaborate across borders, sharing ideas with peers and audiences beyond their reach? What if this experience required no travel or money, just faculty support?

George Mason University’s School of Theater invites you to join 1,001 Plays—an international new play exchange connecting academic theater communities around the world.

Each Global Partner—or participating theater training program—chooses which option works best for them:

  • Interactive Scene or Monologue Workshop

Global Partners sponsor their students, who submit scenes or monologues (in English) on this year’s theme to be rehearsed, performed and recorded with the participation of theater students from another institution. Global Partners commit to facilitating this exploration of perspectives with support from 1,001 Plays.

  • Original 10-Minute Play

Global Partners sponsor their students, who submit original 10-minute plays (in English) addressing this year’s theme. If selected, these plays (or play) will be sent to another Global Partner, where they will be presented as staged readings, along with other student plays in a single program. By sponsoring one or more student playwrights, Global Partners commit to hosting a single program of staged readings (matching the number of playwrights they sponsor), followed by a video chat to include the student playwrights, presenting ensemble, and audience.

Global Partners are encouraged to involve as many students as possible in this project, enlisting their skills in translation, dramaturgy, theater management, and technology, as well as playwriting, directing, and acting. The staged reading format emphasizes process over product; we welcome novice theater students to work alongside their more experienced peers.

Attached you’ll find a flyer, as well as Student Playwright and Global Partner entry forms detailing all requirements. To participate, please email us your completed Global Partner form. Your student(s) will need to email us a completed Student Playwright Form, as well.

For this year’s theme and deadlines, visit our website. If you have questions, feel free to email us. We hope you’ll join us as a Global Partner for 1,001 Plays! Please spread the word to your international colleagues. The more Global Partners we involve, the richer our exchange!

Thank you and best wishes,
